RESUMO

An integrated, remotely sensed approach to assess land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) dynamics plays an important role in environmental monitoring, management, and policy development. In this study, we utilized the advantage of land-cover seasonality, canopy height, and spectral characteristics to develop a phenology-based classification model (PCM) for mapping the annual LULCC in our study areas. Monthly analysis of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and near-infrared (NIR) values derived from SPOT images enabled the detection of temporal characteristics of each land type, serving as crucial indices for land type classification. The integration of normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) derived from Landsat images and airborne LiDAR canopy height into the PCM resulted in an overall performance of 0.85, slightly surpassing that of random forest analysis or principal component analysis. The development of PCM can reduce the time and effort required for manual classification and capture annual LULCC changes among five major land types: forests, built-up land, inland water, agriculture land, and grassland/shrubs. The gross change LULCC analysis for the Taoyuan Tableland demonstrated fluctuations in land types over the study period (2013 to 2022). A negative correlation (r = - 0.79) in area changes between grassland/shrubs and agricultural land and a positive correlation (r = 0.47) between irrigation ponds and agricultural land were found. Event-based LULCC analysis for Taipei City demonstrated a balance between urbanization and urban greening, with the number of urbanization events becoming comparable to urban greening events when the spatial extent of LULCC events exceeds 1000 m2. Besides, small-scale urban greening events are frequently discovered and distributed throughout the metropolitan area of Taipei City, emphasizing the localized nature of urban greening events.

RESUMO

Understanding the magnetic and ferroelectric ordering of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at the nanoscale necessitates a versatile imaging method with high spatial resolution. Here, soft X-ray ptychography is employed to simultaneously image the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic domains in an 80 nm thin freestanding film of the room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO). The antiferromagnetic spin cycloid of period 64 nm is resolved by reconstructing the corresponding resonant elastic X-ray scattering in real space and visualized together with mosaic-like ferroelectric domains in a linear dichroic contrast image at the Fe L3 edge. The measurements reveal a near perfect coupling between the antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering by which the propagation direction of the spin cycloid is locked orthogonally to the ferroelectric polarization. In addition, the study evinces both a preference for in-plane propagation of the spin cycloid and changes of the ferroelectric polarization by 71° between multiferroic domains in the epitaxial strain-free, freestanding BFO film. The results provide a direct visualization of the strong magnetoelectric coupling in BFO and of its fine multiferroic domain structure, emphasizing the potential of ptychographic imaging for the study of multiferroics and non-collinear magnetic materials with soft X-rays.

RESUMO

In patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF), the regurgitant fraction (RF) in left pulmonary artery (LPA) and right pulmonary artery (RPA) is usually unequal. The morphometrics may play a crucial role in this RF discrepancy. Cardiovascular MR of 79 rTOF patients and 20 healthy controls were retrospectively enrolled. Forty-four from the 79 patients were matched in age, sex and body surface area to the 20 controls and were investigated for: (1) phase-contrast flow of main pulmonary artery (MPA), LPA, and RPA; (2) vascular angles: the angles between the thoracic anterior-posterior line (TAPL) with MPA (θM-AP), MPA with RPA (θM-R), and MPA with LPA (θM-L); (3) cardiac angle, the angle between TAPL and the interventricular septum; (4) area ratio of bilateral lung and hemithorax regions. Compared with the 20 controls, the 44 rTOF patients exhibited wider θM-AP, sharper θM-L angle, and a smaller θM-L/θM-R ratio. In the 79 rTOF patients, LPA showed lower forward, backward, and net flow, and greater RF as compared with RPA. Multivariate analysis showed that the RF of LPA was negatively associated with the θM-L/θM-R ratio and the age at surgery (R2 = 0.255). Conversely, the RF of RPA was negatively associated with the left lung/left hemithorax area ratio and cross-sectional area (CSA) of LPA, and positively associated with CSA of RPA and MPA (R2 = 0.366). In rTOF patients, the RF of LPA is more severe than that of RPA, which may be related to the vascular morphometrics. Different morphometric parameters are independently associated with the RF of LPA or RPA, which may offer potential insights for surgical strategies.

RESUMO

Recently, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have become popular because of their simple synthesis and potential applications. Although CQDs have high biocompatibility, their biotoxicity must be verified to reduce the possible risks associated with large-scale application. In this study, the hepatotoxicity of three CQD types, namely diammonium citrate (AC)-based (CQDs-AC), spermidine trihydrochloride (Spd)-based (CQDs-Spd), and AC- and Spd-based CQDs (CQDs-AC/Spd), were evaluated in vivo and in vitro. It was observed in vivo that CQDs-Spd and CQDs-AC/Spd, but not CQDs-AC, caused histopathological damage, including liver steatosis and mild mixed inflammatory cell infiltration; however, reduced liver function was only observed in CQD-Spd-treated mice. The in vitro results revealed that only CQDs-Spd significantly decreased the number of viable HepG2 cells (NADH depletion) and induced oxidative stress (heme oxygenase-1 activation) after 24 h of exposure, which promoted inflammatory factor secretion (NF-κB activation). Additionally, decreasing zonula occludens-2 and α1-antitrypsin protein expression in HepG2 cells suggested that CQD-Spd exposure increases the risk of liver diseases. Our results revealed that CQDs-Spd had greater hepatotoxic potential than CQDs-AC and CQDs-AC/Spd, which might be attributable to their high positive surface charge. Overall, the risk of CQD-induced hepatotoxic risk must be considered when applying positively charged CQDs.

RESUMO

Many insects have evolved the ability to manipulate plant growth to generate extraordinary structures called galls, in which insect larva can develop while being sheltered and feeding on the plant. In particular, cynipid (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) wasps have evolved to form morphologically complex galls and generate an astonishing array of gall shapes, colors, and sizes. However, the biochemical basis underlying these remarkable cellular and developmental transformations remains poorly understood. A key determinant in plant cellular development is cell wall deposition that dictates the physical form and physiological function of newly developing cells, tissues, and organs. However, it is unclear to what degree cell walls are restructured to initiate and support the formation of new gall tissue. Here, we characterize the molecular alterations underlying gall development using a combination of metabolomic, histological, and biochemical techniques to elucidate how valley oak (Quercus lobata) leaf cells are reprogrammed to form galls. Strikingly, gall development involves an exceptionally coordinated spatial deposition of lignin and xylan to form de novo gall vasculature. Our results highlight how cynipid wasps can radically change the metabolite profile and restructure the cell wall to enable the formation of galls, providing insights into the mechanism of gall induction and the extent to which plants can be entirely reprogrammed to form unique structures and organs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Acute angle-closure is a rare manifestation of choroidal metastasis. We reported a case of choroidal metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma presenting with unilateral acute angle-closure attacks relieved with radiotherapy after failed conventional medical and laser treatments. This represented the first detailed report of treatments of secondary acute angle-closure attacks in patients with choroidal metastasis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old female without ocular history was diagnosed with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. One month later, she complained of blurred vision and pain in the right eye that lasted 2 days. IOP was 58 mmHg and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was counting finger in the right eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed corneal edema with ciliary congestion, extremely shallow anterior chamber both centrally and peripherally, mid-dilated pupil and moderate cataract in the right eye. While the left eye was normal. B-scan ultrasound and orbital computed tomography showed an appositional choroidal detachment with an underlying choroidal thickening suggesting choroidal metastasis in the right eye. There was limited effect of medical and laser therapy. IOP was 9 mmHg in the right eye after two months of palliative external beam radiotherapy in the right orbit. BCVA was hand motion in the right eye. Slit lamp examination revealed clear cornea, deep anterior chamber in the right eye. Regression of choroidal detachment and choroidal metastasis in the right eye were observed in B-scan ultrasound. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrated that patient with secondary acute angle-closure attacks from large bullous choroidal detachment related to choroidal metastasis could only be successfully treated with radiotherapy as both medical and laser therapy might not be capable of breaking angle-closure attacks.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Limited data are available regarding pre-liver transplantation (LT) bacteremia in adults with end-stage liver disease. In this study, we investigated the risk factors independently associated with pre-LT bacteremia and their effects on clinical outcomes of LT. METHODS: This retrospective study performed between 2010 and 2021 included 1287 LT recipients. The study population was categorized into patients with pre-LT bacteremia and those without pre-LT infection. Pre-LT bacteremia was defined as bacteremia detected within 90 days before LT. RESULTS: Among 1287 LT recipients, 92 (7.1%) developed pre-LT bacteremia. The mean interval between bacteremia and LT was 28.3 ± 19.5 days. Of these 92 patients, seven (7.6%) patients died after LT. Of the 99 microorganisms isolated in this study, gram-negative bacteria were the most common microbes (72.7%). Bacteremia was mainly attributed to spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. The most common pathogen isolated was Escherichia coli (25.2%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.2%), and Staphylococcus aureus (15.1%). Multivariate analysis showed that massive ascites (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.67, 95% confidence Interval [CI] 1.048-2.687) and a prolonged international normalized ratio for prothrombin time (adjusted OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.074-1.257) were independent risk factors for pre-LT bacteremia in patients with end-stage liver disease. Intensive care unit and in-hospital stay were significantly longer, and in-hospital mortality was significantly higher among LT recipients with pre-LT bacteremia than among those without pre-LT infection. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights predictors of pre-LT bacteremia in patients with end-stage liver disease. Pre-LT bacteremia increases the post-transplantation mortality risk.

RESUMO

Snakebite envenomation is a neglected tropical disease. Taiwan, with its subtropical and Southeast Asian environment, provides suitable habitat for several venomous snake species. Trimeresurus stejnegeri, an arboreal pit viper, is the most common cause of venomous snakebite in Taiwan. Trimeresurus stejnegeri envenomation can cause local swelling, occasional ecchymosis, and wound infection. The primary treatment of T. stejnegeri envenomation is the binary antivenom, vacuum freeze-dried F(ab')2 fragments of equine antibodies, against T. stejnegeri and Protobothrops mucrosquamatus. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of post-envenomation wound infections caused by T. stejnegeri based on data collected over a decade from institutions affiliated with the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. A total of 254 patients were enrolled in this study. Clinical and laboratory data, treatment information, and patient outcomes were extracted from electronic medical records. Wound infection was associated with delay in antivenom initiation (adjusted odds ratio: 3.987; 95% CI: 1.406-11.302). The infection rates were 20.5%, 12.5%, 31.3%, and 48.1% for antivenom administration within 2 hours, 2-4 hours, 4-6 hours, and > 6 hours, respectively. Therefore, early initiation of antivenom treatment (within 6 hours) is recommended. Morganella morganii was cultured from wounds of the patients, whereas Enterobacter cloacae and Enterococcus faecalis were cultured from both the oral cavity of snakes and the wounds of the patients. For post-envenomation patients who develop a local infection, empiric antibiotics such as third-generation cephalosporins, quinolones, and piperacillin/tazobactam are recommended because snakebite wound infections are often polymicrobial in nature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is complicated by multiple environmental and polygenetic factors. The accuracy of artificial neural networks (ANNs) incorporating the common factors for identifying AD has not been evaluated. METHODS: A total of 184 probable AD patients and 3773 healthy individuals aged 65 and over were enrolled. AD-related genes (51 SNPs) and 8 environmental factors were selected as features for multilayer ANN modeling. Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine with RBF kernel (SVM) were also employed for comparison. Model results were verified using traditional statistics. RESULTS: The ANN achieved high accuracy (0.98), sensitivity (0.95), and specificity (0.96) in the intrinsic test for AD classification. Excluding age and genetic data still yielded favorable results (accuracy: 0.97, sensitivity: 0.94, specificity: 0.96). The assigned weights to ANN features highlighted the importance of mental evaluation, years of education, and specific genetic variations (CASS4 rs7274581, PICALM rs3851179, and TOMM40 rs2075650) for AD classification. Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed AUC values of 0.99 (intrinsic test), 0.60 (TWB-GWA), and 0.72 (CG-WGS), with slightly lower AUC values (0.96, 0.80, 0.52) when excluding age in ANN. The performance of the ANN model in AD classification was comparable to RF, SVM (linear kernel), and SVM (RBF kernel). CONCLUSIONS: The ANN model demonstrated good sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in AD classification. The top-weighted SNPs for AD prediction were CASS4 rs7274581, PICALM rs3851179, and TOMM40 rs2075650. The ANN model performed similarly to RF and SVM, indicating its capability to handle the complexity of AD as a disease entity.

RESUMO

Background: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are the main cause of excessive sugar intake and increased health risks. Food companies usually use social media to market SSBs in order to increase consumers' purchase intentions. To reduce excessive added sugar consumption from hand-shaken tea drinks, Taiwan has implemented a mandatory policy requiring clear sugar content labeling. This study aimed to investigate the sugar label information and online marketing strategies for hand-shaken tea drinks in northern Taiwan. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, content analysis was employed to investigate the sugar labeling information and the current situation of online marketing in hand-shaken tea drink brands based in northern Taiwan. Seventy-two hand-shaken tea drink brands' stores were visited to record their sugar labeling presentation methods, with brands lacking labeling, presenting incomplete labeling, or not offering customized sugar levels being excluded, resulting in 60 brands being chosen for the subsequent data collection process. The sugar and energy contents in 1,581 hand-shaken tea drinks were recorded and calculated. Subsequently, the sugar contents were assessed in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) sugar recommendations (25 g/day), warning label criteria, and Taiwan's regulations for low-sugar packaged beverages. Seven brands that had high online impressions were further selected and their marketing strategies in 560 Facebook posts were analyzed. Results: The presentation methods of labeling varied among the 60 brands, and only 42 brands had obvious and easily accessible labeling. The most common labeling presentation method was posters (n = 28). After converting the sugar content of half-sugar and low-sugar hand-shaken tea drinks, it was found that 60.2% of half-sugar beverages and 13.0% of low-sugar beverages exceeded 25 g of sugar per cup. Over 90% of brands had Facebook and Instagram accounts. The top marketing strategies for tea drink brands on Facebook were specific beverage information, brand information, and nutrition and health marketing. Most posts promoted sugar-sweetened beverages. Conclusion: Not all hand-shaken tea drink brands in this study followed Taiwan's labeling regulations. Moreover, high sugar contents in hand-shaken tea drinks labeled as half-sugar and low-sugar could potentially lead people to unconsciously consume excessive amounts of sugar. Future research should explore the impact of online marketing strategies on SSBs consumption behavior and ways to mitigate it among the Taiwanese public.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between hormone receptor levels and telomere length (TL) in infertile women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study recruited a total of 431 cumulus oocyte complex (COC) from 88 infertile women between July 2012 and June 2014. The participants were divided into three groups: young age (<38 years, n = 42 and 227 COC), advanced age (≥38 years, n = 33 and 107 COC) and PCOS patients (n = 13 and 97 COC). Cumulus cells were collected from individual follicle during oocyte pick-up, and the mRNA levels of hormone receptors and TL were measured using real-time PCR. RESULTS: The cumulus cells of PCOS patients demonstrated lower mRNA levels of LH receptor (75.57 ± 138.10 vs. 171.07 ± 317.68; p < 0.01) and androgen receptor (1.13 ± 1.52 vs. 4.08 ± 9.57; p < 0.01), as well as a shorter TL (2.39 ± 2.58 vs. 3.96 ± 4.72; p < 0.01) compared to those of the young age group. In the young age group, only androgen receptor mRNA level showed a significant association with TL (rho = 0.148, p = 0.026), while FSH receptor mRNA level was the only factor associated with TL (rho = 0.247, p = 0.015) in PCOS patients. For advanced-aged patients, no significant relationship was observed between hormone receptor mRNA levels and TL. Alternative splicing of androgen receptors was identified in some PCOS patients but not in young age controls. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the androgen receptor level and function may be altered in the cumulus cells of PCOS patients, leading to a shorter TL in cumulus cells in PCOS patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Delayed awakening after anesthetic discontinuation during awake craniotomy is associated with somnolence during functional brain mapping. However, predictors of delayed awakening in patients receiving monitored anesthesia care for awake craniotomy are unknown. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 117 adult patients with supratentorial glioma in or near eloquent areas who received monitored anesthesia care for awake craniotomy between July 2020 and January 2023 at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. These patients were divided into two groups according to their time to awakening (ability to speak their names) after propofol cessation: longer or shorter than 20 min (median duration). Because propofol was solely used anesthetic from skin incision to dural opening, parameters in Schnider model for propofol target-controlled infusion, such as age, sex, and BMI, were adjusted or propensity-matched to compare their anesthetic, surgical, and histopathological profiles. RESULTS: After propensity-matched comparisons of age and BMI, significant predictors of delayed awakening included IDH1 wild-type tumors and repeated craniotomies. Subgroup analysis revealed that older age and larger T2 volume were predictors in patients undergoing the first craniotomy, while lower preoperative Karnofsky performance scale scores and depression were predictors in repeated craniotomy cases. Delayed awakening was also associated with somnolence and a lower gross total resection rate. CONCLUSION: Our retrospective analysis of patients receiving monitored anesthesia care for awake craniotomy revealed that delayed awakening after propofol discontinuation occurred more often in patients with IDH1 wild-type tumors and repeated craniotomies. Also, delayed awakening was associated with somnolence during functional mapping and a lower gross total resection rate.

RESUMO

Altered prohormone processing, such as with proinsulin and pro-islet amyloid polypeptide (proIAPP), has been reported as an important feature of prediabetes and diabetes. Proinsulin processing includes removal of several C-terminal basic amino acids and is performed principally by the exopeptidase carboxypeptidase E (CPE), and mutations in CPE or other prohormone convertase enzymes (PC1/3 and PC2) result in hyperproinsulinemia. A comprehensive characterization of the forms and quantities of improperly processed insulin and other hormone products following Cpe deletion in pancreatic islets has yet to be attempted. In the present study we applied top-down proteomics to globally evaluate the numerous proteoforms of hormone processing intermediates in a ß-cell-specific Cpe knockout mouse model. Increases in dibasic residue-containing proinsulin and other novel proteoforms of improperly processed proinsulin were found, and we could classify several processed proteoforms as novel substrates of CPE. Interestingly, some other known substrates of CPE remained unaffected despite its deletion, implying that paralogous processing enzymes such as carboxypeptidase D (CPD) can compensate for CPE loss and maintain near normal levels of hormone processing. In summary, our quantitative results from top-down proteomics of islets provide unique insights into the complexity of hormone processing products and the regulatory mechanisms.

RESUMO

Background: Vaccinating adolescents is a vital strategy to enhance population protection without imposing overly restrictive measures on our daily lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. As teenagers gain more independence, their willingness to get vaccinated may depend on their own understanding of the pandemic, vaccines, and mental well-being, as well as that of their caregivers. Our study aimed to examine how Taiwanese adolescents and their caregivers perceive COVID-19 vaccination and assess their mental health status. Methods: We invited a total of 138 vaccinated adolescents and their caregivers to complete several questionnaires, including the Drivers of COVID-19 Vaccination Acceptance Scale (DrVac-COVID19S), Impact of Event Scale (IES), and Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ). Results: Among the adolescents, 76.8% considered the BNT162b2 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) as the ideal option for COVID-19 vaccination, while 27.5% of caregivers expressed acceptance of any available vaccine. Adolescents scored higher than caregivers in terms of vaccine value (p<0.001) and autonomy (p<0.001), but lower in knowledge (p<0.001), as assessed by the DrVac-COVID19S subscales. The adolescents' intention to get vaccinated against COVID-19 (DrVac-COVID19S total score) showed a positive correlation with their perception of the pandemic's impact (IES scores, r=0.214, p=0.012) and their caregivers' vaccination intention (r=0.371, p<0.001). Furthermore, adolescents' mental health demonstrated a positive association with the mental health of their caregiver (CHQ total scores, r=0.481, p<0.001). Conclusion: During the COVID-19 outbreak, caregivers have encountered heightened levels of mental stress, and this stress has been found to be positively correlated with the mental stress experienced by adolescents and their intentions regarding vaccination. These findings can serve as crucial references for healthcare providers and governments when formulating vaccination policies for adolescents in the future.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Neuroplasticity is an ability to maintain neural circuit function when facing damages. It is one of the reasons that making brain tumors notorious. Therefore, we evaluated the characteristics of patients with primary brain tumors, compared neuropsychological deficits between patients who had awake craniotomy with left- or right-sided tumors, and analyzed the association between white matter tracts and neuropsychological deficits in patients with right-sided tumors. METHODS: Using the registration dataset of Chang Gung Memory Hospital between 2014 and 2020, this study included a total of 698 adult patients who received craniotomy for primary brain tumors (538 of conventional craniotomy; 160 of awake craniotomy). Neuropsychological assessments were arranged in patients as preoperative evaluation for awake craniotomies. RESULTS: A lower proportion of right-sided tumors was noted in patient who had awake craniotomy than those who had conventional craniotomy (33.8% and 51.5%, p < 0.001). In awake craniotomy, 88.7% of patients with left-sided tumors and 77.8% of patients with right-sided tumors had neuropsychological impairment. Patients with left-sided tumors had worse preoperative performance compared to those with right-sided tumors in global function (36.2% and 8.0%, p < 0.001), language domain (57.6% and 22.2%, p < 0.001), and attention (36.0% and 18.5%, p = 0.02). Furthermore, in those with right-sided low-grade gliomas, patients involving pathway of superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) I had a higher risk of deficits than those without involvement in verbal memory (p = 0.001, Odd ratio = 11.2, 95% CI = 1.8 ~ 71.4) and visual memory (p = 0.048, Odd ratio = 10.5, 95% CI = 1.0 ~ 111). CONCLUSION: In awake craniotomy, patients with left-sided brain tumors had worse cognitive function than those with right-sided tumors in terms of global function, language, and attention. 77% of patients with right-sided tumors had neuropsychological impairment. Therefore, a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation and awake craniotomy are necessary for patients with brain tumors.

RESUMO

Several dietary indices assess the impacts of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet on health outcomes. We explored DASH adherence and renal function among 85 Taiwanese renal transplant recipients (RTRs) in a cross-sectional study. Data collection included demographics, routine laboratory data, and 3-day dietary records. Three separate DASH indices, that defined by Camões (based on nine nutrients), that defined by Fung (using seven food groups and sodium), and that modified by Fung (as above but separated for men and women) were used. Renal function was ascertained through the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from patients' medical records. Participants' mean age was 49.7 ± 12.6 years and eGFR was 54.71 ± 21.48 mL/min/1.73 m2. The three established DASH diet indices displayed significant correlations (r = 0.50-0.91) and indicated the nutritional adequacy of the diet. Multiple linear regressions indicated a significant positive association between higher DASH scores for each index and increased eGFR. In addition, RTRs in the highest DASH score tertile had higher eGFR rates than those in the lowest tertile, regardless of confounding variables. Adherence to a DASH-style diet correlated with better renal function among RTRs. Educating RTRs about the DASH diet may prevent graft function deterioration.

RESUMO

Optimizing endometrial thickness (EMT) is crucial for successful embryo implantation, but enhancing thin endometrium remains a significant challenge. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)-derived therapies have emerged as a promising approach in reproductive medicine due to their capacity to facilitate tissue repair and regeneration. This study aims to identify the risk factors associated with the failure of intrauterine PRP infusion for thin endometrium in women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF). We retrospectively reviewed data from 77 women with RIF, all exhibiting an EMT of <7 mm. These women underwent programmed hormone therapy for frozen embryo transfer (FET) and received two autologous intrauterine PRP infusions. Following intrauterine PRP-lysate (PL) infusions, the mean increase in EMT was 1.9 ± 1.2 mm, with EMT reaching 7 mm in 86% of the cases (66/77; average EMT, 8.3 mm). We identified an exceedingly thin EMT as a risk factor impacting the therapeutic efficacy in increasing EMT (p = 0.04, OR: 3.16; 95% CI: 1.03-9.67). Additionally, the number of previous uterine surgeries emerged as a prognostic factor for pregnancy failure following PL infusion (p = 0.02, OR: 2.02; 95% CI: 1.12-3.64). Our findings suggest that an extremely thin EMT and a history of numerous uterine surgeries can impede successful pregnancy, even when an optimal EMT is achieved following PRP infusion.

RESUMO

Electrical impulses from cardiac pacemaker cardiomyocytes initiate cardiac contraction and blood pumping and maintain life. Abnormal electrical impulses bring patients with low heart rates to cardiac arrest. The current therapy is to implant electronic devices to generate backup electricity. However, complications inherent to electronic devices remain unbearable suffering. Therefore, cardiac biological pacing has been developed as a hardware-free alternative. The approaches to generating biological pacing have evolved recently using cell reprogramming technology to generate pacemaker cardiomyocytes in-vivo or in-vitro. Different from conventional methods by electrical re-engineering, reprogramming-based biological pacing recapitulates various phenotypes of de novo pacemaker cardiomyocytes and is more physiological, efficient, and easy for clinical implementation. This article reviews the present state of the art in reprogramming-based biological pacing. We begin with the rationale for this new approach and review its advances in creating a biological pacemaker to treat bradyarrhythmia.

RESUMO

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts with superior activity are needed for the production of green hydrogen with a high yield and low energy consumption. Electrocatalysts based on transition metal oxides hold dominance due to their abundant natural resources, regulable physical properties, and good adaptation to a solution. In numerous oxide catalyst materials, ferroelectrics, possessing semiconducting characteristics and switchable spontaneous polarization, have been considered promising photoelectrodes for solar water splitting. However, few investigations noted their potential as electrocatalysts. In this study, we report an efficient electrocatalytic electrode made of a BiFeO3/nickel foam heterostructure, which displays a smaller overpotential and higher current density than the blank nickel foam electrode. Moreover, when in contact with an alkaline solution, the bond between hydroxyls and the BiFeO3 surface induces a large area of upward self-polarization, lowering the adsorption energy of subsequent adsorbates and facilitating oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction. Our work demonstrates an infrequent pathway of using functional semiconducting materials for exploiting highly efficient electrocatalytic electrodes.
